Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Long, violent coughing fits that end in a gasping 'whoop' as the person breathes in, often followed by gagging or vomiting, that develops after common cold or flus symptoms. Fits are usually worse at night. Cough persists for weeks or months.

Medical disclaimer: Whooping cough is most dangerous in babies under 1 year of age, where choking spells may replace the whoop — seek immediate emergency medical care for babies with signs of cough or respiratory distress, particularly following DTap/DTP vaccination.
